Volunteer Spotlight – August 2018

Ken and Amy Kunze

When did you become a Five Acres volunteer?

We started volunteering in March, 2011.

Why did you start volunteering at Five Acres?

Amy – We live nearby so I drove by the shelter every day & always said I wanted to volunteer there after I retired. When I did retire, Ken decided he would volunteer there also. (I also volunteered when Five Acres was still the St Charles Humane Society from about 1978-82).

What is your favorite thing about being a Five Acres volunteer?

We both agree that being shelter buddies is the most rewarding & favorite thing of being a Five Acres volunteer. We enjoy bonding with the dogs & taking them out of the shelter on adventures. It helps the dogs to de-stress & gives them something to look forward to. It doesn’t take them long before they start to recognize us & get excited because they know they get to go out. We also spread the word about Five Acres to everyone who stops to pet the dog(s) while we are out with them. We especially like the bonded pairs. The best part is seeing them get to go to their forever homes, but it is always bittersweet, as we are usually pretty attached.

Do you have a favorite memory, animal or adoption story?

Our favorite memory was when our buddies, Freedom & Ruby, were asked to attend Uncorked as alumni and when we went to visit them backstage they just went nuts when they saw us and were jumping and crawling all over us! This made us know that we had mattered to them, and were able to help them have a better time during their stay at the shelter. Our favorite animal is Harley – what a heartbreaker!

Do you have any pets at home?

We have 3 pets – 2 dogs Shep & Sawyer (a Five Acres alumni) & a cat named Lena.

Why do you think people should volunteer and why is Five Acres a great place to volunteer?

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, and in this case, the animals. Five Acres is a great place to volunteer as there are many different types of jobs to do there and you can always find one to fit your interests. It is rewarding to be with people who also have a heart for the animals.

What types of activities do you do as a Five Acres volunteer?

Amy is a front desk/phone volunteer and Ken does maintenance work around the shelter. We both enjoy being shelter buddies and going on mobiles and cuddle breaks.

When you are not volunteering what do you do in your spare time?

We enjoy spending time with our own pets, watching Cardinals and Blues games, going to wineries and listening to live music.
