Staff Spotlight

Ariel Borkowski

How long have you been at Five Acres? I have been at Five Acres for a year and a half.

What do you love most about your job? I love seeing the animals find their forever homes and getting to write their name on the adoption board, but even more than that, I love seeing the improvements they make by being in our care. Each one has their quirky personalities and I love it when those become revealed.

So far, what has been your favorite moment or memory as a staff member? My favorite part about being a staff member at Five Acres is that I think of everybody here as family. Rather than counting down the hours on the clock until my work day is over with, I look forward to being here and spending time with all the people and animals. There is always something exciting happening!

What drew you to a job at Five Acres? I had first heard about Five Acres when I ran the Trails for Tails 5K in 2011. During my last couple years of college, I was looking for a part-time job and Five Acres popped up on Indeed so I applied. All of my previous jobs had not pertained to animals but I’ve always loved animals and I think it was just “meant to be” that I applied to work here. This place just brings me so much joy.

What is your favorite thing about Five Acres? My favorite thing about Five Acres is that I get to take my dog to work with me, and I get to take dogs from the shelter on adventures/sleepovers/etc whenever I want.

Do you have a favorite past or present Five Acres animal? Why are they your favorite? The first one that came to my mind was a skinny black lab named Burd. He was my favorite because he reminded me of my Dalmatian I had growing up (actually he reminds me of Pongo from 101 Dalmatians as well). He was extremely skinny and timid when he came into the shelter so I made sure to pay extra attention to him, which allowed us both to really bond with each other. We became best buddies and I would take him home sometimes to get him out of the noisy shelter. He was just such a well behaved dog and he melted my heart from the start.

Do you have any pets of your own? I have 1 dog of my own. His name is Snoopy and he looks like a Shiba Inu mixed with a fox.  He is a goofy little guy who smiles all the time. I also grew up with horses, goats, chickens, cows, and of course dogs and cats. My whole family loves animals.

When you are not working, what do you like to do in your free time? In my free time I enjoy staying active. I run, swim and play volleyball often. I also like to travel, catch up with friends, and catch up on sleep!
